Concept car showcased at the 17th Tokyo Motor Show in 1970. The RX-500 has a steel tube space frame covered with a fiber-reinforced plastic and ABS/PC alloy body. Its peripheral ported 10A rotary engines are mounted amidships and all four wheels are fitted with 4-piston caliper ventilated disc brakes.

The Mazda Cosmo Sports was entered in the Marathon de la Route held in August 1968 at the Nürburgring circuit in then Western Germany. The Marathon de la Route was an unforgiving endurance race of time and distance held on a 23 km circuit during which models from Porsche, Lancia, and others engaged in fierce contest. The Mazda Cosmo Sports was awarded 4th place overall.

With the RX-8, Mazda succeeded in the world’s first practical application of a hydrogen rotary engine. A hydrogen rotary engine operates by combusting hydrogen, and as the resulting water is emitted as water vapor, there are zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and hardly any nitrogen oxide (NOx) is produced.
